Well, They recently made it free to play, so there shouldn’t be a problem.

The LOTRO f2p is not really a f2p but rather more like an expanded trial. Once you finish exploring the four starter areas (Bree, Michel Delving, Thorin’s Hall and Ered Luin) you will have access to further areas, but will not be able to find quests in those areas unless you either unlock the area (these are called quest packs) or subscribe. In my kinship I have people that own lifetime accounts (I have 2), people that are subscribed, and people that are opting for the f2p option. They all are having fun. Those opting for f2p chose that option because they are not ingame frequently, and would rather go a la carte and unlock content as they reach the point in which they don’t have any other quests to do or need some more extra space in their bags or to be able to carry more gold. It is pretty convenient from what I am seeing, particularly if you are more of a casual gamer or are on a budget. I’d say give it a roll, if you don’t like it, or have issues, you can just dump it, and without any waste of money.

When you pay you get more areas to explore, more classes to choose, races, weapons, armor, can lvl higher, ECT.

If you want everything the game has to offer you have to pay.
